Fix-It-Friday Wk 10 - Peek-A -Boo-Baby

Edit One.
This was basically just lassoo around child and sharpen, cropping out excess rock face + cloning out the black in the background (using Paint.net). The cloning is not as good as Amy's cloning though! I decided I wanted to keep a fair amount of the rock to maintain the archway and the sense of walking through something, so I just cropped of a bit all round and pushed the boy over to the right in so doing.____________________________________
Edit Two.
Not really sure what I did, but I took the picture into Picnik and played! I know I used some focal zoom with lightening effect. I thought it gave the look of walking through a ray of sunshine :D I then rotated it slightly for effect. Then I recoloured his trousers (as I felt they were distractingly bright) using the 'tone' tool on darken. I added a matt edging and slight frame to match trousers. There may have been some other tweeks, but I can't remember them!___________________________
Edit three.
I'd done lighter, so I thought I'd try darker! Problem is I 've no idea what I did!! It did involve faded LOMO, vibrance and some desaturation - I know that much. I vignetted the edge and then added a clip-mask frame from HERE. I quite like it but not as much as the first edit.___________________________
Edit four.
For fun I thought - "well it's a bit blurry - let's play with that," so back in paint.net I added the zoom blur with just his face in focus. I liked it! It made him look like he was walking through a warp-tunnel!!______________________________________

Great edits. I love that you wanted to keep the some of the rock to frame his face (that was my intentions when I originally took the photo) and I love that you cloned out the black thing. It really opens the photo up and gets rid of a distraction. Beautiful job!!
Super good job on getting rid of the black thingy or whatever we're calling it. I couldn't do that! My fav is the one where you went DARK - very cool!
I LOVE the edges on the second before and after pic. It looks really neat with this photo!
Those are some really fun edits! I like the matted one a lot - it's a really unique effect.

Hi Caroline-
I'm not familiar with those programs, but the basic idea is to take the part of the image you don't want to apply the texture to to another layer and put it on top of the textured layer. In Photoshop you could also do this with any of the selection tools. You could select your subject and then select-inverse and delete the inverse selection. Or you could have another copy of the subject file open and select your subject and then copy it into your textured file, making sure it is the top layer.
I think you should do a tutorial for how to do it in your programs! :) I think it is great the more we photo enthusiasts can help each other. Plus, I find when I write a tutorial it's a great way for me to refer back to my own technique - in case I haven't used it in a while.
