IHeartFaces - Week 15 - Self-Portrait - Kids
This was taken when my 3yo and I were messing on the sofa one afternoon, when I was practicing working with no flash indoors (for no-flash week). It's not as crisp and sharp as I would like, but I still love it! I usually HATE pictures of myself, but this one just seems to encapsulate me when I am happiest - messin' with my kiddos :D We were both laughing together so much over something very silly! :D
I've converted it to B&W (with a subtle hint of colour) and I like it better still this way - I hope you do too. I think it is actually my first B&W entry :D
I've come to the conclusion that my not-so-little bridge camera simply does not have what it takes to shoot lovely sharp shots indoors without either using the flash, taking the f/ stop right down and/or taking down the shutter speed to something impossible to work with free-hand (like 1/5), seriously bumping up the ISO, which then looks grainy and yuk - and besides it only goes up to 800 (which for my dark UK lounge is not really enough), or a weird combination of all of the above. The flash though adds something orangey, so I like to TRY and work without atm - it's good practice anyway :D If anyone has any tips on using a Canon S3 INDOORS in a not so light room I will be eternally grateful :D I'll add
ISO probably 800
Exif:
I'm not sure if I can convince myself to enter the adult catagory this week though, just can't seem to get a shot I like well enough to make it public! :( I'll try again today - the sun is shining so I can shoot outside - but we'll see...

Gorgeous! You both look so happy and comfortable together.
Go for it - you know you want to :)
If I can pluck up the gall to post a self-portrait then anyone can!
I love your kids entry - I have yet to persuade one of mine to get that close but I will go have a shower and work on them again today.
I really like your photo because it looks so real, not posed or set up. I enjoy seeing the true emotions that come through.
I used a Canon S2 IS for years and loved it. I found that as I improved, I felt limited in that my Canon didn't have the range of aperture settings and ISO values. So ... in January I bought a Nixon D80. LOVE IT! I know what your saying about indoor shots with poor lighting; I was never able to get a crisp shot. But that may also be because I'm no expert.
What a fun shot! :-) I have nothing to say as far as constructive criticism - but i love this fun shot and it's great to meet you! :-)
You guys look like you are having so much fun!!! I just want to be in that moment.
that is a great laughing shot
I love, love, love this photo. Your joy is contagious...just looking at this photo I couldn't help but smile.
I saw the joy and laughter right away and you do seem so very happy! I think the conversion adds an artistic edge that allows for less sharpness. Really great!
Would you share your editing secrets? i love the b&w with a hint of color...
Basically I sharpened my son's eyes (using paint.net) then open in Picnik. Hit 'B&W' in the create tools and then faded ever so slightly so as to see the blue in my jumper. Lastly I fiddled a little with the curves, making a slight s to add a variety of tones. Add a frame (matched to mid-grey) and that's it really. It was not the most colourful of photos to begin with tbh, so it wasn't too difficult :D
Ooo, thanks for the info!
This is lovely! The joy in this photo shines right through :)
Sweet shot! You both look so happy!
I like this one too. Good Job. thanks for sharing the tips on how you edit.
