I ♥ Faces - Constructive Cristism Friday

EXIF; Shot on manual, 1/400, f/s 3.5, ISO 80, Focal length 22.5mm,
White Balance - daylight, Vivid Colours mode, Light Metering - Centre Weighted Average.

This is a shot I took of my daughter back in the summer (just remember those blue skies!). I loved it, but I wanted so much more from it - it says so much about her and who she is!
My thoughts are; I love the blue sky, but she is in shadow - and I'd like the whole thing to 'pop' more.

I've showed you the edits I did back then (in July) above and the ones I did today below (basically a re-edit in Gimp now I know a bit more, some touches in Lightroom - and then back to gimp to play with frames!), but I'd really like to know what you think of them and what you much-more-pro-than me-s out there would do with this one! :D

They can all be seen in original resolution if you click on them (so you can use them :D)

... and oh if only I could ask for advice on SO many more!! ;D

I'm really looking forward to hearing what you have to say and seeing what you do with my Lilo, meanwhile I shall checkout everyone else's CCF's over at I ♥ Faces and see what fun I can have with them maybe :D

Hi There! I'm visiting from I Heart Faces. I love beach pix, they are more difficult than most because I the sun and shadows. I always use a fill flash when shooting on the beach. The idea being you want to more closely match the exposure of your subject to the exposure of the background. You can see the result of a fill on the beach (no editing I believe) go to my blog and scroll down to the post "My favorites"

Cute blog by the way. Do you resize your photos manually to get them that big?

Thanks for commenting Brandi. I was amused though because these were taken in my front garden - a long way from any beach! I'll give the fill flash thing a try though when the sun comes out again!

To get the pictures big I edit the HTML - taking out the width and height code completely and replacing the usual s400 bit with s800 - quite simple :D

This really is a lovely shot! The one thing I can see that might help is to crop it to her elbows, that would remove that small blow out spot in the clouds below her and it might give you more artistic freedom. Also, if you have Totally Rad actions you could try the "Lights on" action, then tweak it down to your taste. That gives the impression of a fill flash in certain images. If you don't have that try using your curves and bringing the exposure up throughout the shot then you will probably need to tone down the reds in your saturation. At that point you're free to sharpen in different spots and really bring it out to POP! GOOD LUCK! :)

I thought this was a beach shot too :) Great picture! I love the point of view and the blue blue sky. Good luck with the editing!

Sorry, this is not feedback, I just had to tell you that I've been searching forever to find how to make my pictures bigger. Thanks for posting how you do it, it's so easy. I was wondering if you change the html with every picture you upload or if you can change it to a default setting so the pictures will automatically be that big? Thanks for the help!

Hey, You are very kind. I'm kind of an internet/self taught phototgrapher, so it makes my day when people like my pics. I also love to give credit to people who teach me something, I soak up anything photography wise. It's really just a hobby. Anyways, I shoot with a Nikon D90 and a 50mm 1.8 fixed lens. In the DSLR world I've never know anything else, although all my point and shoots have been canon and I adore them. Maybe someday I'll venture into the Canon world.
